You’ll be fishing in various different scenarios, all of them in the mangrove coast that runs northeast from the city’s coastline: mangrove shore, creek mouths, open bays, deep back in mangrove rivers and inlets. The goal here is to find cruising or rolling tarpon but it is not a rule. Depending on tide conditions, water color, and some other factors blind casting will be necessary when your guide indicates as there are some hotspots that tarpon is hidden but feeding and has been very productive casting. It’s worth taking the time to blind cast for sure. Baby tarpon fishing is not as predictable as other species. These “babies” have to be chased or intercepted, that is the reason that depending on the tide condition sometimes you’ll be 100-yards offshore and other times in the middle of a creek, so it is desirable to be able to cast in different situations, especially for fly anglers. Anglers using light spinning gear will not require long casts but you need to be very accurate. Instructions will be given in advance. If wind is blowing from east or southeast, the mangrove shore is always “mirror” type water, when it changes to west or northwest, the breeze starts rippling the water and that is when sight fishing gets difficult. This usually happens after noon, so more blind casting may be necessary as the day goes on while fishing in open bays.
