At 616-square kilometres, it is the land mass equivalent of Singapore. The lake’s attractive pumice sand beaches give it the appearance of an inland ocean and it offers excellent all year round scenic lake cruises and fishing experiences. Most fishing on the lake takes the form of trolling using either lures or flies, with the catch averaging around four pounds.
Whether you are an experienced fly fisherman or a complete novice you will find fly fishing both a delight and a challenge. The world-renowned Tongariro River is classed as one of the best fly fishing rivers in the world and is also New Zealand’s most popular fishing. Only a 25-minute drive from Huka Lodge, the Tongariro River is a considerable attraction to keen fishermen the world over.
Anglers come to the Tongariro to fish for spawning trout which run up the river from the lake over the colder winter months, both Rainbow and Brown trout frequent these waters and disappointments are rare.
Your fishing guide will pick you up in a four-wheel drive vehicle from the Lodge and return you again. They will provide top quality rods, reels, waders and flys. Charges begin from when your guide arrives and end upon your return to Huka Lodge.
The central North Island offers some of the best hunting in New Zealand. This is available all year round with the possibility of good trophy heads. Bird shooting is seasonal and includes pheasant, duck, and quail, turkeys are plentiful and can be hunted at any time. Allow us create a hunt to suit your specific requirements.
The hunting property is approx. a one-hour drive from Huka Lodge, at the southern end of Lake Taupo and is surrounded by the Tongariro National Park. Helicopter transfers are recommended to save time, should you prefer to do half a day instead of a full day of hunting.
