Benry Smith.
Son of legendary fly-fishing pioneer Charlie Smith, Benry (pronounced just like Henry but with a B) has been guiding clients on Andros Island in the Bahamas for more than three decades. Rather than work out of a specific lodge, Benry is an independent guide and keeps his boat on a trailer. This is a huge advantage as it allows him to use weather conditions, moon phase, tides and client preferences to his advantage.Benry is based in Fresh Creek and fishes the entire north section of Andros Island. Born and raised in Behring Point, Andros Island’s North and Middle Bight is his back yard and having learned from working with his father, Charlie, he has fished every shoreline and flat in the bights from Big Wood key to Loggerhead creek, from Mangrove Cay to Miller creek and in every kind of weather condition. No matter what the wind, Benry can find a lee shore with fish.

Over the last two decades he has been using his mobility (have trailer – will travel) to search out and find new fisheries on the North and West side of Andros Island. Benry fishes on the North end including Mastic Point Ocean flats, The Jolter Cays and on the North West side all the way down to Williams and Billy Island including Red Bay. The west coast of Andros is the quietest, most pristine area in the Bahamas and it has the finest flats fishing in the world. The fisheries cover so many miles of creeks and flats that it would take TWO lifetimes to fish all the habitats.

These fisheries include large schools of Permit in the 20 to 40 lb class, Tarpon in the 30 to 70 lb class and lot’s of double digit Bonefish. Because these fish see very little pressure they can be highly aggressive and will frequently follow a fly or jig all the way to the boat.
