Montana & The Florida Keys, United States
Chukar, Geese, Grouse, Quail, Pheasant, Duck, Brown trout, Cutthroat trout, Bonefish, Steelhead, Tarpon, Permit, Rainbow trout

My name is Carter Bates and it would be my pleasure to guide you in the wonderful state of Montana, as well as the sunny saltwater flats of the Florida Keys. I am passionate about everything outdoors, fly fishing, hunting and my dogs. I have 10+ years of experience in the Florida Keys saltwater fly fishing & commercial fishing , as well as many years river fishing here in Montana and around the United States.

We have excellent trout fishing on several blue ribbon rivers within an hour drive. The Bitterroot River is one of the best dry fly rivers anywhere. Most of our fishing is done from drift boats- this allows us to cover a tremendous amount of water each day.
Aside from fly fishing, I am an avid bird hunter. I currently have two English Setters, one is a well seasoned female, and the other is a young male in training. We hunt Montana, as well as Idaho for many Grouse species,Partridge, Pheasant and Chukar. Also duck & geese in the fall and winter months. These are not driven hunts, all of our upland hunts are walk-up hunts behind pointing dogs. The hunts require physical strength, determination and the willingness to hike for hours. There is no guarantee for success, instead they are about you and the dogs, enjoying the wilderness with the hopes of getting some good shots at a covey or two or three !!! Well worth the effort. I have a kennel at the house with six runs if you would be interested in bringing your own dog(s).

A combination of fishing & hunting is an option during the season that they overlap.

My wife is a wonderful Chef & Hostess. She graduated from Culinary School and has been in the industry for 10+ years. She enjoys many of the same passions as I, and is a wonderful artist in her spare time. As an option we have all-inclusive accommodations here at our home in Montana. Our home has beautiful views of the Bitterroot Mountains, and is just a quick drive from the River.

If you are interested in a fishing adventure down in the Florida Keys, my wife and I would love to coordinate a trip that fits your needs. Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish … whatever it is you're after, I will find the fish & set you up for a great shot … the rest is up to you! Please contact us to plan a trip to remember!

We would love to work for you this season or in the seasons to come. Please contact us for more details, prices & reservations. We would also love to answer your questions, so please do not hesitate to ask !!!

Cheers,

Cat & Carter

Summer 2015 we had the great pleasure of staying at the Wind Dancer house with our delightful hosts, Cat and Carter. When our legs were weary from the awesome recommended list of trails, all within 15 mins, delicious warm food and cold beverages awaited upon our return. In the evening, we watched the sunset from the wrap around porch and then retired to our private guest suite. Cat was available to fulfill any and all culinary wishes while at the same time honoring our dietary restrictions, we were very grateful! We'll see you next summer!!!!

Last Fall we had the pleasure of staying at the Wind Dancer house with hosts Cat & Carter. Between Cat’s cooking and Carter’s river guiding skills we were in heaven. Catching fish left and right and coming home to the most fabulous meals! The setting of the house is spectacular, great for relaxing in front of the fire, or reading on the wrap-around porch. The location is remote but close enough to town to visit the gym or mail a package. We will definitely be back this fall for another visit”. - Aja & Jim B.

I fished with guide Carter Bates on the Bitterroot River in late October 2014. I was disappointed that conditions were not conducive to dry fly fishing, but was pleasantly surprised by the productivity of nymph and streamer fishing. Carter is a fly fishing expert and knows how to match the weather and river conditions if there is not a hatch to match. I stayed at his home with his wife, Catlyn, who cooked the meals, all examples of haute cuisine in an unpretentious, but comfortable, beautiful setting. The Blue Dog Fishing and Hunting Outfitter web-site photo is a view of the Bitterroot Valley from their home on the eastern slope of the Valley near Hamilton, Montana. Can’t wait to return to relax at their home and on the river. Excellent in all aspects” - L. Samuel.

I have had two great experiences with Blue Dog Fishing & Hunting Outfitters. My first trip was October 2014 in Montana for fall fly fishing the Bitterroot river. We also went on a hunting excursion for chukar, hun, sharptail, pheasant & grouse from northeast Idaho to the Canadian border. My second trip was just this past June 2015, (about 2 weeks ago). This fabulous experience was in the Florida Keys. We went fly fishing for Tarpon & Bonefish with great success! Captain Carter and his fantastic chef/wife Cat run a great personal operation-the best guide and food I've had in my 60+ years of fishing & hunting.

I first fly fished the Florida Keys for Tarpon last year with Carter Bates, we had three fish that year in as many days, the Tarpon were hooked and so was I!!!, What a fantastic experience with a very professional guide, his knowledge of the Keys and the fishing come from several years as a commercial fisherman in the Florida Keys and so this year I returned once again, Carter wants you to catch fish and has the patience of a saint, we saw many fish on all the days we fished some well in excess of 100lbs, Tarpon are not easy and you have to place your fly right on the nose but what excitement when you connect, the fight is unbelievable, If you get the chance go to the keys and fish, it is well worth the visit,\r\nWe stayed in a Condo in Duck Key and were looked after by Cat who is Carters wonderful wife and a great Chef, a five star fishing break.
