Sometimes, change can be a great thing. The sport trout of Kashmir are not native fish and were introduced by the British at the turn of the century. The nutrient rich Himalayan waters support a chain of biodiversity so plentiful that both rainbow and brown trout flourished as if they belonged here. Since then, the fishing waters of Kashmir have not escaped the drive of capitalisation and sportsmen must travel to increasingly higher altitudes to enjoy the wilderness that made Kashmir an angler’s paradise. Fortunately, modern access to the famed glacial lakes is just as limited as it was a century ago and therefore these areas remain untouched.
This 12-day expedition is a shortened version of our signature 16-day fly fishing expedition. This package is suited to those who would like to experience Kashmir fly fishing during a short duration of time. The itinerary is structured so that the trekking is consolidated into 5 days, which allows for 3 full days and 3 half days of fly fishing in various locations during the expedition. Since we arrive at each campsite in the late afternoon, it’s also possible to fish during sunset and sunrise.
The trek itself is in the direction of Sonamarg to Narayannag and has a gentle decline in most sections, making it suitable for most people of reasonable fitness and mobility. In addition to fly fishing, the route is also very scenic and there is plenty to experience in the way of nature, ancient relics and culture. Your journey ends with a cultural stay in a houseboat on Dal Lake before flying home.
