Jamie Wilson, originally from Zambia, pioneered safaris in the Niassa Reserve from 1995. With his partner Gonzalo Banus he formed his current company, Luambeze Safaris. The Niassa National Reserve is the largest protected area in Mozambique and covers an area of 42,000 km² in the north. Latest official wildlife aerial surveys have indicated a number of over 20,000 elephants, 14,000 sable and around 9,000 buffalo. The Niassa reserve is unique in the fact that it is privately managed and is sponsored by several world conservation bodies.
