New South Wales, Australia
Brown trout, Trout

Monaro Fly Fishing Tours offer the best wild brown trout fly fishing in mainland Australia. Situated on the south east corner of the Snowy Mountains (Altitude 750- 1170meters) the Monaro boasts world class fishing to the visiting angler with wild brown trout of 2lb to 5lb+.

Several slow moving river systems shed the Monaro with shallow runs between series of deep, slow pools and channels formed between Lilly pads and a variety of water plants, giving educated brownies an abundant supply of various aquatic insects with beetles and other terrestrials making fly fishing the only way to trick these challenging educated fish.

This environment tests ones ability to spot, stalk and cast undetected to cruising and stationary feeding fish which at times will test even experienced angler’s nerves and cunning ability. Local fly patterns designed, tested and proven are available if desired. All fish caught are weighed and released after being photographed so you have a lasting memory of your experience.

Set in picturesque surroundings the two lakes on the property "Kungla" are just the place to learn and enjoy fishing. Chris is a knowledgeable guide and gracious host who went out of his way to ensure we had everything needed for great fishing. The fly fishing experience he provided was just what I was looking for.

I recently spent two days with Chris. It was a fantastic experience. The small lodge was perfect and very cozy with a lovely outlook. Chris was an excellent guide and was also very helpful with advice. The two beautiful lakes on the property were a huge bonus. All in all Chris was a wonderful and thoughtful host. I will go again

My partner and I spent a fabulous weekend with our guide Chris Mckechnie at "Kungla” Lodge. I knew that the weekend was off to a good start when we were offered a meal of freshly shucked oysters and local fish on arrival, in fact, all the meals were delicious and plentiful. The property is spectacular and we were absolutely thrilled to get up close and personal with the many platypus that live in the lakes. My partner and I had no dry fly experience, and Chris taught us basic and advanced casts and the team ambush technique. On the first day, we ventured out on the river to learn to spot, stalk and cast undetected and the highlight of the weekend was watching my partner hook a 4 pound trout, quite an achievement for a novice! We look forward to our next visit to Kungla and to the thrill of the hunt with our talented and knowledgeable guide.

Without a doubt, one of the best trout fishing trips I have ever had. The property is literally gods country, the guide Chris, is one of the most hospitable and knowledgeable guides I have met, and all too willing to fine tune your technique, skills and trout knowledge. The fishing is outstanding. The two main ponds and many feeder creeks on the property and in the area hold some big browns and loads of rainbows. When the hatch is on here, its a sight to see, fish rising everywhere! Highly recommended!

This spot is world class, along with Chris's Guiding service you cant go wrong.I have been many times with the highlight being a 4lb to boast about makes many people envious. His local knowledge, skill and personality are a perfect match for the surroundings, and with introduced wild game species such as red + fellow deer, rabbit, fox, pigs and the odd cat, a great time is to be had hunting. Native wildlife (including Birds and reptiles) is a plenty for the photographer. Looking forward to the next trip
