West Somerset District, United Kingdom
Pheasant

The Wellshead Estate is home to a true Exmoor Shoot.
Situated near the village of Exford in the middle of the moor itself, Wellshead is without doubt one of our most beautiful shoots anywhere in the UK.
Extending to 1500 acres of wild moorland and steep valleys, the shoot is capable of showing really good quality pheasants. The owner and the headkeeper are passionate about continued improvements and this is borne out year-on-year with new drives, new tree planting and adjusted and expanded areas of game crop.
This represents a fantastic opportunity to shoot superlative pheasants in stunning surroundings. The day is centred around a small cottage situated in the middle of the shoot and the hospitality here is amongst the best on Exmoor. Home produced beef, great quality food and wines ensure that everyone leaves lunch well fed and watered.
The Shoot is run exactly along the lines of the owner’s own days and, as a result, a very friendly and non-commercial atmosphere prevails. For good, early season shooting, this is a really terrific venue.

The fishing is simply amazing, large numbers of fish to catch just like Scotland was 100 years ago. You still need to be able to cast and a certain amount of fitness is required but it is truly amazing. The guides are terrible, they are really just boat drivers who on the whole speak no English. Don't expect any help from them, even netting fish! The food is ok, the cooks do their best and the camp managers are generally friendly but young. Travel to and from the camps is horrible. However it is all worth if for the fishing which is what it is all about

Wellshead had nice scenery, well presented birds and our host, James Dent from Roxtons was charming and attentive. The shoot lunch and location could be improved on. All in all a good experience.
